TikTok’s winter beauty obsession is cold makeup.

Is blush the most popular beauty trend on TikTok for 2022? The fact that summer’s “sunburn blush” is now winter’s “I’m cold” frostbitten look tells us that it might be true. With its rosy cheeks, this viral makeup trend looks like Jack Frost is nipping at your nose. This week, people in many parts of Canada saw their first snowflakes. We could get this look by spending just a few minutes outside, or we could fake it with makeup from the comfort of our homes. This fake-frost routine is all about capturing the feeling of a winter chill with all the fun and none of the hassle.

In her viral “I’m cold” makeup tutorial on the app, @zoekimkenealy, a makeup artist who sets trends, says, “There are ways you can do your makeup to make people feel things.” The feeling of “it’s 45 degrees, it’s the holidays, and we’re drinking cocoa” is what started the “cold makeup” movement. Participants in #beautytok looked at snowy selfies on Pinterest or Emily Ratajkowski’s camera roll to get ideas for their own cold-weather makeup looks. Some of the best versions were set to popular holiday songs on TikTok, like remixes of Ariana Grande’s “Santa Tell Me” and a Gossip Girl voiceover mashup set to Wham”Last !’s Christmas,” which really got people in the holiday spirit. With one tap on the #coldmakeup hashtag, you can see 19.7 million different ways that people have used cold makeup. These include rosy cheeks warmed up with blush, wintry pink lips, and light strokes of highlighter that look like just-melted snowflakes. To follow the trend, start by putting translucent powder on top of your usual makeup base. This will give you a smooth surface to work on. The pièce de résistance? Of course, blush. It doesn’t matter what color blush you use; what matters is where you put it and how much you use. Spread the blush all over your cheeks, the tip of your nose, and the area just above your lip.

The “Black girl” and “brown girl” versions of this TikTok trend show how to use different shades to get this “chilled” look on darker, more melanated skin tones. When applied in layers, baby pink and orange blushes work for lighter skin tones, while bright pink and berry blushes make melanin-rich cheeks stand out. Sumaya Yusuf, a makeup artist and member of the 2022 Sephora Squad, says, “I’m not made for winter, but at least my makeup looks cute.” This is her glitzy take on the trend for darker skin tones. “I’m not black, but I’m brown, and girl, I really wanted to do this, but I didn’t know how. Thanks to you, I now do,” says a fan who was moved by your story. Next, eyes are lightly brushed with a neutral eyeshadow, brows are lightly brushed, and lips are blotted with a semi-matte shade of your choice, but a neutral rouge closest to your natural lip color is recommended. Keep the final look matte, or for a holiday touch, add tinsel-like highlights to the inner corner of the eyes, eyelids, and nose. Lip gloss isn’t necessary, but it’s always glamorous. So, cold makeup is the latest beautytok craze to come from the app’s love of makeup, which makes almost anything a makeup moment (see: crying makeup). This generation of social media users seems willing to try almost anything once in the name of beauty to keep up with these trends that change all the time. It turns out to be very cute in this case. Even if it’s just to work from home, it’s not unusual for people to put on a full face of makeup these days, as long as it makes an otherwise boring day at home more interesting. Not to mention that makeup can change how you feel, whether it’s confident… or cold. We’ll give it a try if it makes us happy like the first touch of warmth when we get home after being cold in the snow, but without the snow.
