JOALI’s Two Islands, One for Art and One for Stillness

Two islands in Raa Atoll, and a quiet decision about how to spend the time together

In the Maldives, JOALI keeps two very different islands within reach of one another, and the choice between them says a great deal about how a family wants to travel. One is shaped by art, colour and open water. The other slows to the pace of breath and tide. Together, JOALI Maldives and JOALI BEING read as two interpretations of the same idea, that a holiday can be a shared experience rather than a backdrop, and that real luxury is measured in attention rather than excess.

JOALI Maldives

The island that lives with its art

JOALI Maldives describes itself as the Maldives’ first art-immersive island, a claim it earns in the details rather than the brochure. Villas open onto white sand and water the colour of sea glass, and the art is made to be lived with rather than looked at, woven into the architecture, the dining and the excursions across the year.

Creativity as the day’s itinerary

At the JOALI Art Studio and Gallery, guests shape ceramics on a pottery wheel or work with colour through Fluid Art, leaving with a piece that belongs to the stay. Elsewhere on the island, Porky Hefer’s life-sized treetop manta ray invites guests to climb in for a private dinner suspended among the canopy. For younger visitors, Muramas Kids Club turns the island itself into a classroom, with nature-led learning and imaginative play, while evenings can unfold under the stars at the outdoor cinema.

On the water

Adventure, then a table over the lagoon

Beyond the shoreline the days open up, through snorkelling, ocean excursions and private yacht journeys across the atoll. Evenings bring another register entirely, from sushi and teppanyaki in the striking overwater setting of Saoke to Italian cooking at Bellinis, each dinner staged as carefully as the art.

The art here is not on the wall. It is the room you wake in and the reef you swim out to.

JOALI BEING

A second island, built entirely around well-living

A short journey away, JOALI BEING follows a different philosophy. Billed as the first well-living island of its kind in the Maldives, it is organised around four pillars, Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy, and the whole island is designed to leave guests feeling lighter than they arrived. Transformation is meant to happen in the spaces themselves, from the KAASHI Hydrotherapy Hall with Watsu, an Aufguss sauna and salt inhalation, to a Turkish hammam and the movement zone at CORE.

Well-living

Movement, nature and mindful connection

The programming reaches from sound healing to a friendly padel session among the coconut palms, and a Herbology Workshop at AKTAR draws on the traditions of the spice market to explore the properties of herbs and botanicals. Families can also deepen their connection with the island through its marine conservation work, including the Sea Turtle Care Centre and its partnership with the Olive Ridley Project.

A table that tells the same story

Dining at JOALI BEING carries the island’s thinking onto the plate. FLOW works to an Earth-to-Table philosophy, while Yutori showcases Japanese craftsmanship with ingredients drawn from land and sea, and the tea lounge at SAI and the flavours of MOJO round out the rhythm of the day. Mindful cuisine nourishes without lecturing, and B’Kidult welcomes families with activities built around connection and shared well-living.

Two islands, one idea

Choose your kind of together

Read side by side, the two islands present complementary versions of meaningful family time, one led by creativity and exploration, the other by restoration and mindful discovery. What they share is a belief that the point of a place like this is not to impress you, but to give you back to each other for a while.

For Boujeez,

The most considered luxury rarely asks you to choose more. It asks you to choose well. JOALI’s two islands make that choice the whole point, art or stillness, motion or rest, and in doing so they turn a holiday into something closer to a decision about attention. For a Gulf traveller with the means to go anywhere, that is the quiet distinction worth paying for, a place that knows exactly what kind of time it wants to give you.
