The Triathlon World Is Coming to Hudayriyat Island
For ten days this November, one Abu Dhabi island becomes the centre of the endurance world. From 13 to 22 November, Hudayriyat Island hosts the 2026 World Triathlon Multisport Championships, the first time the event has been held in the Middle East and North Africa. Organised by World Triathlon and staged by Modon, it will bring more than 4,000 athletes from around the world to race for world titles, and turn a stretch of Abu Dhabi coastline into a single, connected festival of sport.
The Concept
One Island, One Championship
The idea is unusually neat. Every race will start, transition and finish at 321 Sports on Hudayriyat Island, so the whole championship unfolds in one place. Athletes, families and spectators share a single Championship Village, with racing, recovery, dining and entertainment all within walking distance. It is a stay-train-race-relax model the organisers say suits elite competitors and the age-group athletes racing alongside them in equal measure.
The Racing
Six Disciplines, One Coastline
The programme spans six multisport disciplines: duathlon, cross duathlon, aquathlon, long distance aquabike, cross triathlon and long distance triathlon. Each has its own character, and each draws on a different face of the island.
The routes are the surprise. Athletes will swim in the turquoise water around Hudayriyat, ride purpose-built cycling tracks and technical mountain-bike trails, and run coastal courses with uninterrupted sea views. Some events cross the Hudayriyat Bridge, with panoramic views over Abu Dhabi’s coastline and skyline. It is, the organisers suggest, a side of the emirate many international competitors will not expect.
The Festival
Ten Days, Not One Race
This is built as a festival as much as a championship. The opening weekend brings back the World Triathlon Championship Series, staged alongside the Multisport Championships after its earlier postponement, and the schedule runs through elite sprints, relays and world-title races to a long distance finale on 22 November. There are community races for children aged four to fifteen, and, away from the courses, the soon-to-open Velodrome Abu Dhabi as a centrepiece, with entertainment and live concerts at Surf Abu Dhabi still to be announced.
The Field
The Region on the Start Line
The field is filling fast. More than 35 national federations have confirmed, among them Great Britain, the United States, Australia and Brazil, and organisers expect athletes from more than 45 countries by November.
The home team will be its largest yet. The UAE is set to field more than 160 athletes, with qualification still open to residents and Emiratis. “Hudayriyat Island provides a championship setting unlike any other,” said Antonio Arimany, President of World Triathlon, pointing to the infrastructure and the stay-train-race-relax offering as the reason athletes and families will want to be there for every moment.
The Destination
Beyond the Finish Line
For a destination that has spent years building its case as a home for sport, this is a natural next step. “Everything is within walking distance, allowing athletes to focus on what matters most,” said Jamie Dean, Executive Director of Sports at Modon, adding that the courses, from open-water swims to the bridge crossing, show a side of Abu Dhabi many people simply will not expect. Between races there are beaches, hospitality and dining to fill the days.
For Boujeez
The most convincing sporting destinations are the ones that make the whole experience feel within reach, where the racing, the recovery and the celebration all sit close together. Hudayriyat Island has bet on exactly that. For the region, a World Championship arriving on home ground reads less as a one-off than as a marker of how far the Gulf’s sporting ambitions have come, and how comfortably they now sit on the world stage.
